Wet, Wet Nose! – Dog’s noses are wet; we all know this! But do you know why? It’s to help them absorb scent chemicals! So, if you’ve ever found yourself wondering why your pooches snoot is wet, the answer is that dog’s noses are wet to help them absorb scent chemicals!

Their nose secretes a special mucus that helps to absorb these chemicals, and then they lick their noses to sample them, helping them understand what the smell is.

A Good Buoy! – Newfoundland’s make excellent lifeguards! This is because of their waterproof coats and webbed feet – they’re excellent swimmers that were originally bred as fisherman’s helpers and to rescue people from drowning.

Some owners have even reported that their Newfoundland tries to “rescue” them when they’re swimming or even in the bath!

Faster Than a Pussycat – A greyhound could beat a Cheetah in a land race! No, really! While a cheetah can get up to almost 70mph, they can only keep this going for around 30 seconds. Greyhounds, on the other hand, could easily run at speeds in excess of 35mph for seven miles. So despite the cheetah’s head start, they’d soon overtake!

Deaf Dalmatians? On average, around 30% of adult Dalmatians are deaf in one ear, 5% in both ears. But do you know why? This is due to something called the extreme piebald gene which is responsible for their white coat and blue eyes (in some of them).

Dalmatians with larger dark patches are less likely to be deaf.

Blink, Blink, Blink? – Dogs have three eyelids! They’re not the only animal to, cats also have a third eyelid. This eyelid is called the ‘haw’ or nictitating membrane, and it’s responsible for keeping the eye protected and lubricated.

Not only that, but one sure indication that your pooch isn’t feeling very well is if this membrane sticks. If you notice the haw not receding once they’re way it could mean they’re not very well. Get them to the vet to get checked out.

More Sniffer Fun! – Have you ever tried sniffing and breathing at the same time? Are you trying it now? It can’t be done! But dogs can do it! Dogs rely a lot on their sense of smell to find food, potential dangers, and friends, so needless to say they sniff a lot.

Their noses are designed so smells can stay in their nose while air can move in and out of their lungs at the same time, which means they can breathe freely and still work out what that smell is!
