Fun facts about Chihuahuas!

They’re Small & Stay Small! – These dogs are an absolute dream for small dog lovers – they’re obviously born small but only grow to weight between 2 and 6 pounds and 7 to 9 inches tall in height. Adorable! Though they can be bred with other breeds to make them smaller or bigger, Chihuahuas are recognised as the smallest dog breed in the world .

In 2013 a Chihuahua named Milly was officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s smallest living dog. She was only 3.8 inches tall when fully grown!

.They Have Long Life Spans! -  It’s understood as a rule of thumb that the smaller the dog breed, the longer their life span tends to be. Chihuahuas definitely show this – on average they live to be between 13 and 15 years old. That’s approximately 76 in small dog years!

Chihuahuas are Brainy! – When it comes to brain size in relation to body dimensions, Chihuahuas have the largest brains of all dog breeds.

That’s right, the smallest pup has the relatively biggest brain! And this comes with smarts too - most dog breeds are bright, but some are brighter and easier to train than others. Chihuahuas in particular are a bright breed and are, in turn, easy to train for obedience.

They’re Small but Loyal – Chihuahuas are known for their loyalty. They enjoy spending quality time with you whether it’s sitting on your lap during your leisure time or taking a ride around town with you.

They’re Fun & Playful -  We’re not sure why but sometimes Chihuahuas can be portrayed as a bit aloof and standoffish, but this isn’t true! Sure, they can get a bit possessive with their chosen person, but Chihuahuas are actually playful and fun little characters! Though, of course, all dogs are different, you probably won’t meet two Chihuahuas who are identical in temperament.

Chihuahuas Make Good Guard Dogs! -  No, really! Despite their small stature, they are loyal and animated and make great guard dogs. They are a vocal breed, and are wary of outsiders, so if someone approaches your home or aims to intrude, your chihuahua is going to make sure everyone knows about it.

There are Two Official Chihuahua Varieties – Though they can be bred with other breeds, there are only two official varieties of Chihuahua; The two varieties of Chihuahua are the smooth coat and the long coat.

The American Kennel Club  classifies both types as one breed, while in the UK they’re considered two separate breeds. What can we say, we like to be different!

Interestingly, the long coated Chihuahua actually shed less than the smooth – though they do need grooming more often o make sure their coat doesn’t get matted or tangled.
