Alaskan Klee Kai - Now this is one cute pupper! And quite a new one, the Alaskan Klee Kai has been bred to do a companion pooch. These sweet little dogs, often described as ‘mini huskies’, quickly become attached to their owners. This is very sweet, but it also means that they don’t deal well with being separated. Their high pitches scream can be quite disturbing for their owners and neighbours to hear!
American Pitt Bull Terrier – American Pitt’s are often used as guard dogs, and they’re great at it! But this breed can be anxious and destructive when left home alone. Australian Shepherd – This breed was bred to work on farms, herding cattle and sheep, hence their name! Australian Shepherds are very intelligent dogs and like to stay active. But when they’re left alone with nothing to do, they can suffer badly with separation anxiety. If you’re wanting to get one of these pups, make sure they’re not left along for long spells of time.
Bichon Frise – These are another breed that make wonderful companion pets. They’re sweet, loyal and great for first time dog owners. However, these dong crave attention, especially from the owners, and don’t like to be left alone for long periods of time. They’re companion dog status and loyalty to their people means being separated from them for a long time can cause them stress and anxiety.
Border Collie - Another herding dog in the mix! Like the Australian Shepherd, Collie’s were initially bred to be farm dogs. They’re incredibly intelligent, which means they need a lot of mental and physical activity and stimulation. So, periods at home alone with nothing to do can lead to destructive behaviour.
Chihuahua - Loved for their ability to adapt to apartment living, Chihuahuas have a reputation for being little dogs capable of a lot of noise. Normally with their owners throughout the day thanks to their portable size, Chihuahuas love human company and can become destructive or even aggressive when left behind at home alone.
Cocker Spaniel - Initially bred to function as gun dogs, the Cocker Spaniel would follow their owners around woodland or fields during hunts. Unsurprisingly, they love to be outdoors. So, if left indoors alone, you could experience some symptoms of separation anxiety with these dogs.
German Shepherds - German Shepherds are people pleasers. Known for their working dog mentalities, German Shepherds do best when they have a job. Protecting and being with their owners might be one of their favourite tasks of all, but when separated this breed can show severe anxiety symptoms.
The Labrador Retriever - This is a beautiful and companionable dog, but they have recently declined in health and temperament, and this can make them more prone to separation anxiety and behavioural challenges. The Lab is still currently the most popular family dog breed and generally has a relaxed disposition. However, because they are so social, they can struggle if left alone for long periods of time.
