Good Taste - Dogs have phenomenal sense of taste! Dogs are often praised as having a great sense of smell and hearing, but their taste is brilliant too! Dogs have about 1700 taste buds in the tips of their tongues.

They can taste sweet, sour, bitter and salty foods. This is useful and important for them to be able to gauge what is good to eat and which isn't. This is useful when finding nice things to eat but also what might be dangerous, what is safe and what is tasty!

Humans have around 10,000 taste buds but are all over our tongue and even our lips. Dogs taste buds are on the tips pf their tongue which is why you might find your dog giving something a tiny lick before deciding if its good to eat or lap up!

Don't Sweat - When we get hot, we sweat. Humans have almost everywhere on our bodies whereas dogs only have them on their paw pads & noses. If you dog gets hot or nervous (especially the vets) you might notice little wet paw prints, thats them sweating. But, unlike us, dogs do not rely on sweating to help them cool down when it's warm.

Dogs pant to cool their bodies down. When a dog pants, they are swapping the warm air in their bodies for the cooler hair outside, this is to help speed up the evaporation of water from their tongue, mouth, and upper respiratory tract. As it evaporates it helps regulate the dogs body temperature.

This help them cool down! When it's hot you should make sure your dog has plenty of drinking eater and doesn't run around too much. Dogs can get overheated and dehydrated very easily!

Digestive Feat - A dogs digestive tract is almost three times the length of their body! That's end from end! And interestingly, even though their food moves slower through their stomach than us, it moves faster through their intestines than our food does. In humans, this process takes about 20-30 hours, for dogs, its only 7-8! That's rapid!

They Smell Better Than Humans - Dogs have millions more scent receptors in their noses than humans do; some breeds have up to 300 million compared to our mere 5 million! It's for this reason that some breeds of dog are trained specially to sniff our drugs, dead bodies, explosives, medical ailments and more!

Did you also know that dogs can breathe in and out at the same time? You know that that means? They can play the digeridoo, not really it is a functional skill! Dogs, when sniffing, can breathe in and out at the same time to create a continuous cycle of air. Dogs use sniffing, a lot, for a variety of reasons! So this means they won't get dizzy or pass out!

A Dog's Vision - It was long believed that dogs only see in black and white. I actually bet if you ask the average non-dog owner if dogs see colour, they'll answer no. But that's not true! Scientists have now found that dogs DO see in colour, though a lot less colour than we see.

Dogs actually see in a range of blues, green-yellow, yellow and shades of grey; that's MUCH more than plain ol' black and white! That's why our awesome Dog TV episodes are in hues of these colours - no point making Dog TV that only humans can enjoy!

If that wasn't interesting enough, dogs also have a third eyelid! Though it isn't used for vision. This eyelid is actually called the nictitating membrane and is primarily used to protect the eye but is also used to produce tears. Usually when a dog is unwell their nictitating membrane will be visible. A clear indication your pooch is under the weather.
